Talking to Parents and Caregivers
You will interact with parents (stakeholders) daily. Maintaining professional boundaries while being supportive is a delicate balance. Communication is a key RBT skill.
Stay in Your Lane
Answer questions about the session ("He ate his snack," "He did great with matching"). Do not answer questions about the treatment plan ("Is he autistic?", "When will he talk?"). Refer clinical questions to the BCBA.
Be Positive
Start and end conversations with something positive (the "Sandwich Method"). "He worked really hard on puzzles today. We had some trouble with transitions, but he finished strong." This builds rapport with the family.
Objective Reporting
Just like your notes, keep verbal reports objective. Avoid gossip or oversharing personal information. Keep the focus on the client.
