What is Total Task Chaining?
Total Task Chaining is a variation of Forward Chaining where the learner attempts every step of the chain during every session.
The RBT provides assistance (prompting) ONLY on the steps the learner gets stuck on. It is like "whole task" teaching.
When to Use It?
1. The learner already knows many of the steps.
2. The learner is a fast learner.
3. The steps are not too complex.
RBT Practice Exam Scenario
Question: "An RBT allows the client to wash hands independently, only stepping in to help when the client forgets to use soap. What chaining is this?"
Answer: Total Task Chaining.
Frequently Asked Questions About Total Task
Is it faster than Forward/Backward?
Yes, if the learner can handle it. It prevents the boredom of just practicing Step 1 over and over.
What is Graduated Guidance?
It is often used with Total Task. You use hand-over-hand, then shadow your hand, then back away, adjusting moment-to-moment.
Can you mix chaining methods?
Usually, you stick to one per skill to avoid confusing the learner, but the BCBA may change the method if data shows no progress.
