What is the Sensory Function?

Sensory (or Automatic) behavior is "Self-Stimulatory." The reinforcement comes from the act itself, not from another person.

Clue: It happens when they are alone!

Interventions for Sensory Behavior

Sensory behaviors are the hardest to treat because you can't easily control the "feeling."
1. Sensory Extinction: Masking the sensation (e.g., putting a helmet on a head-banger, putting carpet on a floor for a wrapper-crinkler).
2. Replacement: Give them something safer that provides the same feeling (e.g., a chewy tube for a biter).

RBT Practice Exam Scenario

Question: "The client hums loudly while playing alone, while eating, and while working. Why?"
Answer: Sensory/Automatic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sensory

Is "Stimming" bad?

Not necessarily. We only target it if it causes injury or stops them from learning. Everyone stims (e.g., tapping foot).

Why is it called "Automatic"?

Because the reinforcement is produced automatically by the behavior.
