What is the Attention Function?

Attention seeking behavior is doing something to gain a reaction from others.

Clue: They often look at you while doing it. If you leave the room, they stop.

Interventions for Attention

1. Planned Ignoring: Do not react to the behavior.
2. NCR (Non-Contingent Reinforcement): Give them lots of attention before they ask for it (fill their cup).
3. FCT: Teach them to say "Look at me" or "Play with me."

RBT Practice Exam Scenario

Question: "The client spits. The RBT yells 'Don\'t spit!'. The client spits again immediately. Why?"
Answer: Attention. The yelling was a reinforcer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Attention

Is eye contact "attention"?

Yes! For some kids, even a "look" is enough of a reward.

What if ignoring them is dangerous?

If they are hurting themselves, you cannot ignore. Block the behavior neutrally (no talking, no eye contact).
