Reporting Abuse and Neglect

As an RBT, you are a mandated reporter. This means you are legally required to report any suspicion of child abuse or neglect to the authorities (e.g., CPS).

When to Report

You do not need proof. You only need reasonable suspicion. If a child has unexplained bruises, says they are afraid to go home, or appears consistently malnourished, you must act.

Procedure

Follow your company's policy, but remember: you are responsible. Typically, you inform your supervisor immediately, but if they say "don't worry about it" and you still suspect abuse, you must report it anyway. The safety of the child is paramount.

Immunity

Mandated reporters are protected by law from retaliation if the report is made in good faith. Do not be afraid to speak up. You are the child's advocate.
