Starting Small

We always want to use the least intrusive intervention that is still effective. We do not jump to restrictive measures unless absolutely necessary for safety.

The Hierarchy

Start with reinforcement (least intrusive). If that fails, try extinction. Punishment is a last resort. We want to build behavior up, not just suppress it. Positive reinforcement is the gold standard.

Promoting Independence

Use the least intrusive prompt necessary. Don't use hand-over-hand (physical) if a gesture works. We want the client to do it themselves. Fading prompts is part of this.

Ethical Mandate

The RBT Ethics Code requires us to minimize the use of restrictive procedures. We advocate for the client's right to the least restrictive environment. Freedom of movement matters.
