What is Functional Analysis (FA)?

Functional Analysis (FA) is the only method that demonstrates a CAUSAL relationship. It is an experiment. The BCBA intentionally triggers the behavior to see if their hypothesis is right.

For your RBT practice test, you must know the 4 conditions:

  • Attention Condition: Ignore the client. If they act out, give attention. (Testing for Attention function).
  • Escape Condition: Give a demand ("Do math"). If they act out, remove demand. (Testing for Escape function).
  • Tangible Condition: Take away toy. If they act out, give toy back. (Testing for Access function).
  • Alone Condition: Leave child alone (safe). If they still do it, it is likely Sensory (Automatic).
  • Play (Control) Condition: Free toys, attention, no demands. Behavior should remain low here.

RBT Role

It is dangerous. RBTs only assist under strict supervision. Never do this alone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Functional Analysis

Which assessment is the "Gold Standard" for finding function?

Functional Analysis (FA).

What is the difference between FA and FBA?

FBA is the whole process (Indirect + Direct). FA is one specific experimental tool within the FBA.

What does the "Play" condition test?

It acts as the Control. Ideally, zero problem behavior happens here.
