What is a Functional Assessment?
A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a process used to identify the purpose (function) of a challenging behavior. Why does the child hit? Is it for attention? Escape? Toys?
For your RBT practice test, you need to know your role. The RBT DOES NOT design the FBA. The RBT assists by collecting data (like ABC data) and conducting observations.
The 3 Types of FBA Methods
1. Indirect Assessment: Interviews, Checklists (RBT usually does not do this alone).
2. Direct/Descriptive Assessment: Observing in the natural environment. ABC Data, Scatterplots. (RBTs do a LOT of this).
3. Functional/Experimental Analysis: Manipulating variables in a controlled setting. (RBT assists BCBA).
RBT Responsibility
Your job is to be the "Camera." Capture honest, accurate data. Do not analyze it yourself. Do not tell the parent "Oh, he hits because he hates math." That is the BCBA's job. You just report: "He hit when math was presented."
RBT Practice Exam Scenario
Question: "A parent asks the RBT why her son is screaming. What should the RBT do?"
Answer: "Refer the parent to the BCBA." RBTs do not interpret function.
Frequently Asked Questions About FBA
Does an RBT write the FBA?
No. The BCBA writes the FBA. The RBT collects the data for it.
What is the "Function"?
The reason the behavior occurs (SEAT: Sensory, Escape, Attention, Tangible).
What data does an RBT collect for FBA?
Typically ABC Data, Scatterplots, and Frequency/Duration/Latency data.
What is the goal of an FBA?
To create a behavior plan that reduces the maladaptive behavior and teaches a replacement behavior.
Is FBA required?
Ethically, yes. We must know why a behavior happens before we treat it.
