Handling Dangerous Situations
While we focus on positive behavior change, you must be prepared for crises. The RBT Task List requires you to know how to respond to emergencies. Your primary goal is safety.
Prevention is Key
Use antecedent strategies to prevent behavior from escalating. Recognize precursors (e.g., clenching fists, pacing). Intervening early is safer than managing a full-blown crisis. De-escalation starts before the crisis hits.
Protecting Clients and Self
Know your company's policies on restraint and seclusion. Restraint is a last resort and only used when there is imminent danger of harm. Follow your training (e.g., PCM, CPI) exactly. Safety trumps instruction.
Post-Crisis Documentation
After a crisis, you must document it. Complete an incident report detailing exactly what happened, who was involved, and how long it lasted. This protects you and the organization and informs future safety plans.
