Managing Motivation (MOs)

The value of a reinforcer changes based on the client's state. These states are called Motivating Operations (MOs). Satiation and Deprivation are the two ends of the spectrum.

Deprivation (Wanting It)

When you haven't had something for a while, its value goes up. If you haven't eaten all day, food is highly reinforcing. Deprivation increases the effectiveness of a reinforcer.

Satiation (Had Enough)

When you have had too much of something, its value goes down. If you just ate a huge meal, food is not reinforcing. Satiation decreases the effectiveness.

Clinical Application

Don't use Edibles directly after lunch. Vary your reinforcers to prevent satiation. Keep the client "hungry" for learning (metaphorically). Variety maintains motivation.
