What is a Physical Prompt?

A Physical Prompt is physically guiding the learner's body to complete the task. It is the most intrusive prompt type.

Types of Physical Prompts

1. Full Physical (Hand-over-Hand): You control the movement 100%. Useful for teaching motor skills (e.g., holding a pencil).
2. Partial Physical: You touch their elbow or wrist to guide them, but they do some of the work.
3. Light Touch / Shadowing: You hover your hand near them or lightly tap them to initiate movement.

RBT Practice Exam Scenario

Question: "The RBT holds the child's hand to help them write the letter 'A'. What type of prompt is this?"
Answer: Full Physical Prompt.

Ethical Consideration

Always respect body autonomy. Only use physical prompting when necessary and usually with prior consent/planning. It is intrusive.

Frequently Asked Questions About Physical Prompts

When should I use Full Physical?

When the learner has zero idea how to do the motor movement (e.g., swinging a bat, tying shoes) or for safety.

How do I fade it?

Move from Hand -> Wrist -> Elbow -> Shoulder (Graduated Guidance). Fade the pressure/contact.

Is "Shadowing" a physical prompt?

Yes, because you are ready to intervene physically. It is the lightest form.
