What is Instructional Control?
Instructional Control (often called "Rule Governance" or plain "Listening") creates a positive working relationship where the learner responds consistently to your requests.
It is NOT about being a bossy dictator. It is about Pairing yourself with reinforcement so the learner wants to work with you.
The 7 Steps to Instructional Control (Schramm)
1. Keep control of the reinforcers.
2. Pair yourself with fun.
3. Say what you mean and mean what you say.
4. Show that following directions = getting what they want.
5. Start easy (High-P requests).
6. Prioritize your relationship.
Frequently Asked Questions About Instructional Control
What if the client ignores me?
You likely have weak instructional control. Go back to Pairing. Make yourself the "giver of good things."
What is the Premack Principle?
"Grandma's Law". First do what I want (work), then you get what YOU want (play). This builds control.
Is it the same as Compliance?
Yes, effectively. But "Instructional Control" implies a broader history of cooperation.
