Protecting Client Information
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is federal law. It protects the privacy of Protected Health Information (PHI). Violating HIPAA can lead to firing and legal action.
What is PHI?
PHI includes names, addresses, photos, diagnoses, and any information that can identify the client. You must keep this confidential.
Common Violations
Talking about a client in a public place (coffee shop). Leaving a data sheet in your car. Posting a photo of a client on social media (even without their name!). These are major ethical breaches.
Need to Know
Only share information with people who need to know for the client's treatment (Supervisors, Parents). Do not share with your friends or family. Privacy is a client right.
