What is a Fixed Ratio (FR)?

Fixed Ratio (FR) means reinforcement is delivered after a set number of responses. "Fixed" = Constant. "Ratio" = Count/Number.

FR5: The child gets a token after every 5 math problems.
FR1: The child gets a token after every 1 problem (CRF).

Characteristics

It creates a "Steps" pattern on a graph. Characteristics include:
- High rate of responding.
- Post-Reinforcement Pause: The learner takes a short break immediately after earning the reward because they know they have to do 5 more to get the next one.

RBT Practice Exam Scenario

Question: "A worker gets paid $10 for every 100 boxes he packs. What schedule is this?"
Answer: FR100. It is a set number (100) of responses (packing).

Frequently Asked Questions About FR

What creates the "Post-Reinforcement Pause"?

The predictability. The learner knows "I just finished, now I have a mountain of work before the next pay," so they procrastinate slightly.

Does FR produce high rates?

Yes. The faster you work, the faster you get paid. So learners usually work fast.

What happens if the ratio is too high?

Ratio Strain. If you switch from FR1 to FR100 overnight, the learner will quit (Abulia). You must thin gradually.
