What is an Extinction Burst?
A temporary increase in the frequency, intensity, or duration of a behavior when extinction begins.
Analogy: Vending Machine.
1. You put money in, push button. No soda.
2. Do you walk away? No! You push the button HARDER and FASTER. You might even kick the machine.
3. That is an extinction burst.
How to Handle It
DO NOT GIVE IN. If you give the reinforcement during the burst, you have just taught them to scream louder/kick harder. You must ride it out.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bursts
Are they dangerous?
They can be. We don't use extinction for severe aggression without a safety plan.
