Navigating Rules on Gift Giving

The RBT Ethics Code is strict regarding gifts. Navigating these situations requires tact and professionalism. Understanding the rules about accepting gifts prevents ethical violations and maintains appropriate boundaries.

The General Rule

RBTs should generally decline gifts from clients or their families. Accepting substantial gifts can create a dual relationship or conflict of interest. It blurs the line between professional and friend.

Cultural Considerations

However, the new ethics code acknowledges cultural norms. If refusing a small, occasional gift would be culturally offensive and harm the therapeutic relationship, it may be accepted. The key is "occasional" and "small value" (e.g., a cup of coffee or a handmade card).

Money and Gift Cards

You should never accept money or equivalents like gift cards. This is a hard line. Monetary transactions alter the nature of the professional relationship and are strictly prohibited.

What to Do

If offered a gift, politely decline and thank them. "Thank you so much, but I am not allowed to accept gifts." If they insist and it is small/cultural, consult your supervisor immediately for guidance.
