Teaching "This, Not That"

Discrimination training teaches a client to respond to a specific stimulus but not others. For example, stopping at a red light but going at a green light.

The Process

Reinforce the behavior in the presence of the correct stimulus (SD) and use extinction in the presence of the incorrect stimulus (S-Delta). "Point to cat" -> Client points to cat -> Reinforce. Client points to dog -> No reinforcement. This creates stimulus control.

Generalization

Once the client knows "cat" (black cat), teach them "cat" for white cats, tiger cats, and cartoon cats. This ensures the skill is useful in the real world. Broadening the concept is the next step.

Real World Examples

Knowing who is "Mom" vs. "Teacher." Knowing which restroom sign to follow. Discrimination is essential for safety and social functioning.
