The Importance of Reliable Data

Behavior analysts rely on data to make decisions. As an RBT, you are the primary data collector. If your data is inaccurate, the entire treatment plan could be flawed. Ensuring data accuracy is your highest priority.

Prepare Before the Session

Read the behavior intervention plan (BIP) before starting. Know exactly what behaviors you are tracking and how to measure them. Have your timer, clicker, or data sheet ready. Preparation prevents missed data.

Record Immediately

Do not wait until the end of the session to recall how many times a behavior happened. Record it as it occurs. Memory is unreliable. Immediate recording ensures validity.

Integrity Checks

Your supervisor will conduct Inter-Observer Agreement (IOA) checks. This compares your data with theirs to ensure consistency. Use these opportunities to calibrate your measurement skills. High IOA scores show you are reliable.

Honesty is Key

If you miss a data point, do not guess. Mark it as "no data" or inform your supervisor. Falsifying data is a serious ethical violation and harms the client. Integrity helps the client succeed.
