The Foundation of Therapy
Before you can place demands, you must establish yourself as a reinforcer. This process is called pairing. It is the most critical step in starting with a new client.
Follow the Client's Lead
In the beginning, play with what the client wants to play with. Narrate their play without asking questions or giving commands. Show them that you are fun.
Non-Contingent Reinforcement
Give access to preferred items freely, without requiring "work." You want the client to associate your presence with good things. You become a conditioned reinforcer.
Maintain Rapport
Pairing isn't just for the first session. You should pair at the start of every session to re-establish the relationship. A strong relationship increases instructional control.
