What are Environmental Variables?
In ABA, behavior does not happen in a vacuum. It happens in an environment. We must assess how the environment affects the client.
For your RBT practice test, look for terms like:
- Setting Events (Motivating Operations): Did the child sleep poorly? Are they hungry? Are they sick? These "set the stage" for behavior.
- Physical Environment: Is it too loud? Too bright? Too hot? Is the room crowded?
Why it Matters
If a child is screaming, and you find out they have an ear infection (Setting Event), do you need a behavior plan? No, you need a doctor. Assessing these variables prevents us from treating medical problems as behavior problems.
Frequently Asked Questions About Environmental Variables
What is a Setting Event?
An antecedent condition (like illness or hunger) that alters the value of reinforcers and the probability of behavior.
Should RBTs record this?
Yes! In your session notes, always write: "Client appeared tired," or "Room was very noisy."
Is this part of assessment?
Yes. We assess the environment to see if we can modify it (Antecedent Intervention) to make success easier.
